What Influences Wedding DJ Cost in New England?
What Influences Wedding DJ Cost in New England?
Your guest will think the flowers are pretty, and they will look great in pictures.
Your guests are not going to remember the food (sorry caterers).
If the music isn't good, the DJ sucks, your wedding guests are going to remember that. Music is one of the most impactful parts of any wedding experience.
Often, wedding entertainment slips lower on the priority list for vendors and budget.
In this article, we'll discuss some of the critical factors that influence Wedding DJ costs in New England. Hopefully, you'll have a better idea of what to expect to pay and what to expect to get for your budget.

Customization Can Affect Pricing: DJs offering personalized playlists, lighting, and extensive pre-wedding preparation can spend up to 50 hours working on your event, which increases costs.

Geographic Location in New England
The cost of hiring a professional wedding DJ in Boston or any major city in New England is higher due to the higher demand and cost of living. These DJs are also more in tune with current music and trends, as cities are generally the hotbeds of those things. DJs in or near major cities perform more often, host nightlife events, and reach a wider variety of music and audiences.
Wedding DJ pricing in New England's more rural areas may be lower due to the lower cost of living. One potential downside of hosting your wedding in a rural area, such as the woods of New Hampshire, Maine, or Vermont, is the limited availability of vendors like wedding DJs. While you might find that overall costs are lower in these locations, travel fees for entertainment services could increase your total expenses. In contrast, cities like Boston, Portland, or Providence typically offer a wider range of options for wedding entertainment.
If I travel over two hours from Boston, I need a hotel for the night. It’s essential for my rest and the safety of myself and my crew, ensuring we don’t drive home exhausted.
Planning a destination wedding in Newport, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Block Island, or Cape Cod? Don't expect lower rates just for being outside the city. Weddings in these areas tend to be more extravagant, leading to higher costs and increased expectations for quality, especially from your wedding DJ.
When looking at Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, or Block Island, you have limited options for entertainment based on the islands themselves. Most likely, you will have to bring in a DJ from the mainland for your wedding. DJs will often want to ensure they are there the day before in case of ferry cancellations or delays.
DJs have to bring a lot of equipment. Most DJs will be able to use a large SUV or van to transport their equipment on the ferry. Ferry costs can be steep; a van to Nantucket in summer may cost around $700 for a round trip. Vehicles must be booked well in advance if you are having a wedding in the busy summer, so book your wedding vendors early!
Wedding DJ Experience and Reputation
One of the most apparent differences in pricing will be a veteran professional DJ versus a newer wedding DJ. A highly experienced DJ with great reviews will be more expensive than those just starting out, plain and simple. That doesn't mean a newer DJ can't be an excellent wedding DJ. However, you do need to do your due diligence.
The same can also be said for veteran DJs. Some of them are fantastic, but some might not be as in tune with current trends. They might rely too much on their good reputation and reviews over time. Again, due diligence is important.
Wedding DJ Image
Pay attention to the branding of any DJs you are looking at. Good branding, or even a genuine effort towards it, may seem trivial, but it reflects that the DJ or their company cares about their image. It shows they put extra effort into how they present themselves and how others perceive them.
If their website looks like it hasn't been updated since 2005, that should be a red flag.
If they don't have much social media presence, that should be a red flag.
Big DJ Company vs. Independent Wedding DJ
When looking at the DJ options, remember that you'll find a couple of different company styles. You will discover companies with several DJs on their roster that can cater to various audiences. Then, you can find companies that specialize and may only be a single person. In the DJ industry, we call these 'Multi-Op' and 'Single-Op.'
A specialized DJ is recognized for their unique wedding lighting, curated playlists, and collaborative approach to music selection. These DJs typically charge a premium for their services, as they provide a level of attention and quality that is often absent among average wedding DJs or those from larger companies. They aim to stand out and ensure that their offerings are anything but average.
Wedding DJ Reviews
Reviews are super important when evaluating any wedding DJ or vendor. But they don't tell the whole story. You need to look at their work or examples of their work to get the right picture of your potential wedding vendor.
I want to discuss a topic that is intensely debated in the wedding industry but not widely recognized in the public eye: review websites and directories.
Many review sites and directories, like Wedding Wire and The Knot, are great starting points for your search. However, if a vendor isn't listed or has an inactive profile, don't discount them completely.
Over the years, many wedding vendors have expressed concerns that these websites are financially taking advantage of them. As a result, some have chosen to reduce their profiles or withdraw entirely. When you research reviews, check Google and social media to see what others think about your potential vendors.

Do wedding DJs charge per hour or per event?
The length of your wedding day affects the overall cost of your wedding DJ. Two factors that can increase costs are if your DJ handles the ceremony and if they stay for an after-party.
Wedding DJ Pricing Structures
You will find New England wedding DJs approaching their pricing in a few ways.
The first one you will likely see is hourly rates. For example, they may quote you $1,500 for four hours. Most weddings, not including ceremonies or after-parties in New England, last around five hours. Be sure to check what the ceremony or cocktail hour costs are for the full-time are before comparing them with other quotes.
BUYER BEWARE: Be very wary if you see packages offered for three hours for a wedding.
The other option that you will see is a flat fee or all-inclusive rate.
Here at Mixlux, I have adopted this style. We charge based on the day of service. This means minimal situations where you will see your price increase after booking. For example, if you want to extend your party, that time is covered without expensive overtime fees.
What equipment does a wedding DJ need?
Although the equipment should never be the main selling point for any DJ when approaching a client, it plays a crucial role in determining pricing, as it outlines what services will be provided. A basic DJ setup for a standard wedding typically includes:
Two speakers.
The DJ controller and their computer.
A mixer and a couple of wireless microphones.
We can consider advanced equipment and add-ons like uplighting, extra speakers, and photo booths. These will affect the price and may increase costs if extra staff is needed.
DJs invest significantly in their equipment. It's comparable to the difference between a Kia and a Mercedes—both will get you where you need to go, but one is basic and functional, while the other is stylish and luxurious.
You can expect that a more expensive DJ will use higher-quality equipment. This equipment may lead to better performance, reliability, and sound or light quality, allowing them to deliver their best work.
There are occasions when a DJ may not provide or use their own equipment. Most of the time, this is because they are a larger name talent traveling in for your wedding. Other situations may be that you are hosting at a live music venue, and their sound system is sufficient and meets the DJ’s technical requirements.
BUYER BEWARE: Any venue that is not a professional music venue and tells you that the DJs use their built-in system is hiding something from you! Generally, these venues not only provide but also require the use of their sound system. This is generally because they have had noise complaints. Their system has been tuned to prevent noise complaints, which generally means that it is only loud enough for background music… if you want a fantastic dance floor, these venues will ruin that dream for you. There are a few in Massachusetts and New England, and while I won’t put them on blast here, I’m happy to let you know how they are if you email me.
Customized Wedding DJ Playlists
Customization is huge in weddings right now because no one wants their wedding to be cookie-cutter or exactly the same as someone else's.
Every wedding DJ should ask you for must-play songs,do-not-play songs, and special requests. They should also help you with song selection for formalities, such as the first dance and parent dances.
On the lower end of wedding DJ pricing and into the average-priced DJs, you will often find that they are playing a preset selection of popular wedding songs. They are only customizing what they're playing based on the must-plays and do-not-plays that you have given them.
Now, there is nothing wrong with this approach. This is acceptable for couples that don't have distinct musical tastes or just want someone to play music and don't care that much about the music.
Couples who are passionate about music or have unique tastes should seek a DJ who can collaborate with them to create a personalized soundtrack for their wedding. The effort involved in crafting and curating custom playlists can take significantly more time than preparing a standard DJ set for a wedding.
DJ Travel and Overnights
We talked a bit about travel costs earlier when talking about where you are going to host your wedding. Let's break down a little bit more about what goes into it.
Some wedding DJs will charge by mileage, some by travel time, and some by flat rate.
If your DJ needs to stay overnight, it's best to either secure a room in the hotel where you are staying or hosting your wedding or allow them to book their own accommodations that meet their needs.
Luckily, I have not experienced this, but I have heard horror stories of DJs who allowed their clients to book their accommodations. The wedding was hosted, and the clients and guests stayed at a 5-star hotel. The DJ ended up in a motel where they were charged by the hour. Not a good look!
If your wedding DJ needs to setup the day before or will need to be on-site the day after, you should expect to pay for that time. This is not common in Boston, and most weddings do not have that need.
You should also expect to pay for a half-day rate to a full-day rate and per diem for food for the DJ and their staff.
Wedding Season and Holidays
It is uncommon to find wedding DJs or other wedding vendors offering peak versus off-season pricing. However, you may find it in the venues. As this work is generally creative work, the level of what needs to happen doesn't change just because it's winter.
The same goes for weekdays versus weekends. They are likely going to cost the same. Sometimes, a DJ may offer a discount or incentive for booking during off-peak times or on weekdays. However, you shouldn’t expect this, as it is not common.
Booking your wedding on a holiday or holiday weekend, you could actually expect the possibility that you may have to pay more. There are a few reasons for this: 1, simply being basic supply and demand. These are very popular dates, and DJs do not want to go out for anything less than their full rate on those days because demand is so high.
Memorial Day weekend, 4th of July, and Labor Day weekend are popular dates. You should expect to pay the full rate on those dates.
New Year's Eve is the one holiday where you can genuinely expect to face increased costs.
Rates for wedding DJs on New Year's Eve maybe 50% to 100% more expensive than standard rates. This is often because the wedding will be longer overall, and they will have to play their staff more. After all, people will want to go until 1 AM. Also, many DJs may want to spend time with their own loved ones on New Year’s Eve; lastly, driving home late on New Year’s is one of the riskier nights of the year due to the concern of intoxicated drivers.
What does a wedding DJ package include?
Okay. Let's talk wedding DJ packages.
DJs take several different approaches to packaging their creative services for your wedding. All-inclusive packages are probably the most common.
You'll see them in about 3 tiers, often labeled something like silver, gold, and platinum, or anything generic like that. These 3 different tiers of packages frequently include a lot of extras.
A silver package, for example, may include basic wedding DJ services.
A gold package may include basic wedding DJ services, ceremony coverage, and a little dance floor lighting.
A platinum package might include the DJ for the reception and ceremony as well as enhanced lighting or photo booth.
These packages may be strict and not allow you to make substitutions, and sometimes, they include things you don't truly need.
Wedding DJs that book more on a la carte options will provide a bare minimum base. For example, when you book me, you will receive my DJ services for the reception as well as basic uplighting and dance floor lighting.
The a-la-carte-based DJs allow you to choose only what you need and add more during the planning process.
Most DJs incorporate their setup and teardown time into their pricing. However, needing to set up early, limitations on how early you can set up, or limitations on what time they need to be out of the venue may add cost because of having to bring in extra labor.
It's more than day-of-service.
It's important to remember the overall time that a DJ spends working on and at your wedding.
My average wedding day is around 16 hours. It can go as low as 12 and as high as 22. These are very, very long days for us. Depending on the DJ you hire, the amount of work they put in in advance can be very time-consuming.
The lower-end and average DJs will put in 10 to 15 hours of work before your wedding. When you hire more expensive specialized DJs who will curate custom playlists or come up with custom lighting designs and work much more closely with you, you'll find that they can average between 35 to 45 or even 50 hours of work before your wedding.
When you look at the price, and it seems expensive for one day of work, remember that it is much more than one day for the DJ.
Conclusion
The average price of a wedding DJ in New England can vary depending on several factors, including location experience, equipment, time of year, and the level of customization and specialization. On average, throughout New England, you should expect to invest between $1700 to $3000 for a suitable professional DJ.
