What Should a Wedding MC Actually Do?
The best wedding MC is the one nobody talks about the next day.
That's the goal every time I pick up a mic. Your guests should leave talking about the music, the dance floor, and the two of you. If they're talking about the MC, something went sideways.
Couples bring this up with me constantly. They don't want the cheesy wedding DJ. Here's what MCing looks like at a MixLux wedding, and how to figure out what you want from yours.
What Does a Wedding MC Do?
A wedding MC keeps the night moving and keeps everyone on the same page. Entrances, toasts, the cake, the first dance, the moment the dance floor opens. Guests need to know what's happening and when.
My job is to say those things clearly and in a way people relate to. I speak in a normal tone of voice. It can sound excited when the moment calls for it, but it's never over the top.
Before dancing, I'm conversational and present. Once dancing starts, I step back and let the music speak. I'm on the mic when something needs saying, and off it the rest of the time.
Why Don't I Do the Hype MC Act?
Because I never wanted to be the stereotypical wedding DJ.
I've seen that DJ live. The wrestler voice on the entrances. The line dances. The games where guests get pulled onto the floor whether they want to be there or not. It's close enough to the Saturday Night Live version that people laugh about it at weddings.
None of that is what we do at MixLux. The night isn't about me. It's about my clients.
How Do You Get Guests Dancing Without Games?
With good music, plain and simple. Here's how I open a wedding dance floor:
One moment right before open dancing. Either a group shot with your photographer, or everyone joins the two of you for a slow song. It's one or the other. The slow song is often your backup first dance pick.
One announcement. The dance floor is open. That's it.
The music. A banger off your must-play list if we can, and timeless classics that cross generations, so everyone in the room hears something that feels like theirs.
No line dance required. When the music is right, people come to the floor on their own.
Is a High-Energy MC Ever the Right Choice?
Yes, for some couples.
Some people want the big personality on the mic, the games, the organized dances. For them, that's the right call, and there are DJs who do it well.
It's not what I do, and it's not what most of my couples are looking for. I say that up front on the first call. If a couple wants the hype MC, I'll politely tell them we're not the right fit. That's better for everyone than finding out on the wedding day.
How Do You Know What Kind of Wedding MC You Want?
Picture the morning after. What do you want your guests talking about?
If you want them talking about the entertainment, a high-energy MC might be your match. If you want them talking about the music, the dance floor, and the two of you, look for an MC who stays in the background.
Then ask every DJ you talk to how they MC. Ask what their voice sounds like on the mic. Ask how they get people dancing. The answer tells you a lot, fast.
